Kumarajiva (344-413 c.e.)

Kumarajiva entered the Sarvastivadin monastic order in Kashmir at the age of seven. His mother was a princess who entered the order and took him with her. They remained three years and studied under the most renowned Theravadin teachers, Kumarjiva studied astronomy, mathematics and occult sciences at the age of ten. He came in contact with Mahayana Buddhism in Kasgar and continued his Mahayana studies after returning to Kucha. He was later held hostage for seventeen years when the Chinese conquered Kucha. Finally he went to Ch'ang-an and began translating mahayana and theravadin texts.

His two most important students wer Seng-chao and Tao-sheng, and the San-lun schools owes it's begginings to Kumarajiva.
