Wu-tsu Fa-yen 1024-1104

Student of Pai-yun Shou-tuan and teacher of Yuan-wu (Engo) & K'ai-fu Tao-ning

Fa-yen was a master in the use of Koans following their early development in the Sung dynasty period. He is the subject of four koans in the Mumonkan. This was a period of koan practice before the cases were recorded and written down.

Case 36: Fa-yen, "If you meet a man of Tao on the road, greet him with neither words or silence. Now tell me, how will you greet him?"
